The crazy wild fire season reminds me of this wild fire Amy and I paddled through in June of 2011. This photo and the heat from the 100 foot flames that engulfed the scene moments earlier are forever etched in my memory. Over 5 million acres have burned in Alaska this year. Hotter, drier summers are here to stay, the climate is changing and these big fires are one example of what the new normal could look like. #expeditionflashback #wildfire #wilderness #keepitwild #photoofday

It was fun to be live from the #mnstatefair this morning on #kare11 to talk about @savethebwca and our upcoming #wildernessyear . Stop by the Save the Boundary Waters booth in the Dairy Building to learn more and sign the pledge to protect the #BWCA . We are looking forward to some food on a stick before we head into the Boundary Waters for a year on September 23rd. What should we check out while we are at the fair?

Our campsite includes a massive rock covered in lichen that juts into the water facing down the South Kawishiwi River. It is a wonderful place to while away the afternoon, but I can’t shake the fact that Twin Metals is trying to build a giant copper mine in a sulfide ore body less than 2 miles from this very spot. Its good to listen to the locals, but in the end you have to objectively evaluate your skills and make your own decisions. In this instance the sign seems pretty outlandish since we had already paddled close to 2,000 miles down the Mississippi River and there were no obvious hazards for experienced, well prepared paddlers in the wide big muddy waters below the sign. #expeditionflashback 2001
