At 9:21 AM the sun appeared to be right above the equator. The equinox signals that fall has officially arrived in the Northern Hemisphere. We paddled up the Kawishiwi River 366 days ago to bear witness through every season as the Earth completed its annual pilgrimage around our sun. We find ourselves on the Kawishiwi River once again, but now we’re about to paddle out of the Wilderness. The Wilderness has remained largely the same as it was a year ago, changing leaves, crisp and foggy fall mornings, loons’ elegant summer plummage fading, moose rutting– all like a clock tuned to the Earth’s rythms. A year is a blink of an eye for the Wilderness, but for us this year has been transformative.
We have been forever changed by the Wilderness and will leave it knowing that we must speak loudly for this quite place, and that our collected voices have the power to effect change, ensuring that wild places like the Boundary Waters remain for future generations. After all, Wilderness belongs to all of us, those living now and generations from now.

Thanks Freemans for speaking up for the BWCA over the last year. Over a lifetime, dating back to my first trip in 1967, I’ve had the opportunity to travel many routes, from the Little Indian Sioux in the west to Sag and Magnetic in the east and many routes in between. Nothing, of course, approaching what you’ve done. My wife Kate and I won’t be able to welcome you back, since we’ll be doing some days trips out of Poplar Lake beginning tomorrow to lakes east of Winchell where I’ve never been. We became sustaining members of Save the Boundary Waters in part because of your commitment. Take care and welcome back!

Mark,
Thank you for supporting the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters and for your kind words. We hope you had a great canoe trip. The end of September is a wonderful time to be in the Wilderness and Winchell is a beautiful lake. Dave and Amy Freeman
