The first tiny flowers are appearing, grasses are sprouting, buds are bursting, and lily pads are unfurling. Everyday the plants make a little progress. Soon forest and bogs, lakes and streams will regain their summer brilliance. The sun climbs higher in the sky with each passing day and now fills our tent with light at 5 AM.
The other day I rested on a sun-warmed toilet. For the first time I can remember, I enjoyed the simple pleasure of a warm seat during my morning routine. Winter seems like a distant memory and we have started encountering some of the canoe season’s first visitors.
A couple days ago we met a solo canoeist, who was the first person we encountered since ice-out other than the people that brought in our last resupply. The next day we saw two other parties. We were a little taken back that all three parties recognized us. I guess it is a good sign that the word about our #wildernessyear to @savetheBWCA is being spread far and wide. We enjoyed talking briefly with each group. Please feel free to say hello if you spot us this summer. We enjoy meeting new people, but please remember that no more than 9 people and 4 watercraft are allowed together in the Wilderness.
Please help us spread the word about the threats Twin Metals and other proposed sulfide-ore copper mines bring to the this amazing Wilderness. You can sign the petition and learn more at SavetheBoundaryWaters.org
