Cheese and butter infused grits bubbled away on the wood stove as we enjoyed steaming cups of @stonecreekcoffee this morning. We reminisced about all the visitors we have had over the last week. Paul Schurke, our long time friend and boss at @wintergreendogsledlodge has brought several groups out to visit us this winter by dogsled. He often refers to us as “the loneliest couple in America”. (You may recall that Dorothy Molter was referred to as “the loneliest woman in America “.) As was the case with her, this is far from the truth for us too, thanks to Paul and all the other folks that bring us supplies.
By dogsled, ski, snowshoe, and on foot, old friends and new friends, young and old, people made the trek out to nourish our hearts, heads, and stomachs. One of the groups included our youngest visitor yet. Ely residents, Paul and Brittany brought their 9 month old and 2 year old daughters out to visit!
People are supporting our efforts in so many ways: donating to @savetheBWCA, volunteering at Sustainable Ely, signing the petition (link in our bio). We are so grateful to be part of the growing movement to protect the Boundary Waters watershed from Twin Metals and other sulfide-ore copper mines that are being proposed along the edge of the Wilderness.
