In June the U.S. Forest Service announced it was considering protecting Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from the threat of sulfide-ore copper mining by withholding consent to the renewal of two mineral leases held by Twin Metals. The lease stage is the only point at which to determine whether the location for the mine is appropriate. The proposed Twin Metals Mine poses severe threats to the pristine water and untrammeled Wilderness that we are bearing witness to during our #wildernessyear to @savetheBWCA. Today, July 2, is the last day of the public input period, so please sign the petition today (link in our bio)!
These leases were issued in 1966, before any significant environmental regulations existed, including the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act.
