On Tuesday July 19, the @u.s.forestservice is holding a public listening session in Ely, MN from 5:00 to 7:30 PM to help it determine whether the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Areas Wilderness (BWCAW) is the right place for America’s most toxic industry. The Forest Service is weighing whether or not to consent to renew two expired leases to mine for copper in a sulfide ore body on public lands in the Superior National Forest– right next to the Wilderness.
Polling shows that two-thirds of Minnesotans oppose sulfide-ore copper mining near the BWCAW–including more than 60 percent in Minnesota’s Eighth Congressional District. In the last two weeks more than 55,000 people have signed petitions telling the Forest Service to withhold consent to renew the leases. Please sign the petition @savetheBWCA and go to Ely on the 19th. Visit http://ift.tt/29G5SbW for more information. This is a critical time and we must all speak loudly for this quiet place.
