July 4, 2016 By Dave Freeman

Nothing says July in the Boundary Waters like plunging into Beth Lake and nothing is more American than than our public lands. As we celebrate the 4th of July we should also celebrate places like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This national treasure belongs to all of us and its up to us to cherish and protect it.

Last night Amy and I read one of Sigurd Olson’s earliest essays about the importance of Wilderness. We often think of him when we think of the Boundary Waters and Wilderness as a whole because of his tireless work to protect the singing Wilderness he spoke about so eloquently. The reality is that most of us can’t speak as poetically as Sigurd Olson, but our voices are just as important and now is the time to raise our voices to a new height.

The U.S. Forest Service is in the middle of a 30 day public input period as it determines if it will renew several 50 year old mineral leases along the southern border of the Wilderness currently held by Antofagasta, the Chilean mining company that owns Twin Metals.
It is imperative that we all raise our voices in support of this iconic Wilderness. Visit http://ift.tt/1x2erSX and take action today.
