Today has been a day of camp chores: gathering firewood, hauling water, chopping frozen chicken for the dogs, and writing. We have friends joining us tomorrow, so we want to have our camp squared away before they arrive. A gentle snow has been falling since dusk last night. The constant patter on the tent last night and the occasional swish of snow sliding down the side of our @seekoutside tipi made it seem like we would be greeted by several inches of fresh new snow when I unzipped the tent this morning.
To my surprise, only a quarter of an inch had fallen. The snowflakes were shaped like tiny little needles, a most unusual shape. The snow continued all morning as we went about our chores. This afternoon we plan to take the dogs out for a short run, but mostly it has been a simple day in a silent landscape. “Simplicity in all things is the secret of the wilderness and one of its most valuable lessons. It is what we leave behind that is important. I think the matter of simplicity goes further than just food, equipment, and unnecessary gadgets; it goes into the matter of thoughts and objectives as well. When in the wilds, we must not carry our problems with us or the joy is lost.” -Sigurd Olson

Please help us @savetheBWCA so future generations can experience the valuable lessons that the Wilderness offers. Voyaging into the Boundary Waters is bound to uncover a bounty of simple secrets held within this labyrinth of pristine waterways and within ourselves. The silence and untrammeled beauty of the Wilderness is an integral part of these lessons, which will be lost forever if we are not vigilant.
