Last night freshly fallen snow glistened in the light of the full moon shining through the clear, cold night sky. The temperature dipped to zero for the first time on Christmas Eve and the new ice west of Horseshoe Island sang as it grew all night. Who could ask for a better Christmas present than that?! After a leisurely breakfast of gingerbread pancakes smothered in butter, washed down with a few steaming cups of coffee, we headed down the lake to check the ice. We cautiously approached to sharp line where the ice that formed more than a month ago meets the new ice. We were pleased to find about 4 inches clear ice covered in a dusting of snow.
We decided to continue west to Moose Lake and were excited to find about 4 inches of clear ice and dusting of snow there too.
The lakes are finally frozen and the land is covered in snow. In a few days some friends will haul out our canoe and paddling gear and haul in our toboggans, skis, and remaining winter equipment. What a wonderful Christmas present! The only other thing I want for Christmas is to @savetheBWCA and together we can accomplish just that. By taking action and speaking loudly for this quite place, we can protect the Boundary Waters watershed from sulfide-ore copper mines. #wildernessyear #savetheBWCA #BWCA #Christmas #Instagood #OnlyinMN #winter #fun @goalzero @seekoutside
