Steam rose from the open water west of Horseshoe Island. The strong west wind that has blown for several days has eaten away at the ice. The wind is supposed to die down this evening and, with any luck, most of the large and medium sized lakes in the Boundary Waters will freeze over.
This afternoon we walked down the lake to get a closer look at the open water. It was a beautiful sight of water and mist and trees covered in snow.
Moments like this will remain etched in our memory long after we leave the Wilderness and remind us why we are out here. There is no other place on earth like the Boundary Waters, we all must work together to @savetheBWCA from the sulfide-ore copper mines that are being proposed along the southern border of the Wilderness. If built, these mines would dramatically affect the Wilderness. Now is our chance to permanently protect the Boundary Waters Watershed from sulfide-ore copper mining; please make your voice heard and help protect this amazing Wilderness.
