December 15, 2015 By Dave Freeman

We spent several days in camp because rain and warm weather covered Ensign Lake in slush and severely weakened the ice. Today we were finally able to venture out. The temperature dropped to 19 degrees overnight and the lake firmed up nicely. After breakfast we struck out across Ensign, headed for Newfound Lake. Tomorrow we are planning to move our campsite to Newfound and we wanted to test the ice and make sure the route was safe.

It felt wonderful to stretch our legs and read the tracks that criss crossed the lakes and trails we traversed. On Newfound the tracks of 4 wolves merged and they ran together down the lake. Their tracks were frozen into the slush. Further on a Pine Martin bound across the lake. The imprint of each tiny pad and nail of its tracks was perfectly preserved in the ice.
Fresh now clung to the trees and the portage trails are finally covered in snow. West of Horseshoe Island we could make out the undulating blue of open water that stretched to the horizon.
Everyday we see and hear something new and we are constantly reminded what a special Wilderness we are immersed in. Please follow @savetheBWCA , sign their petition, and help protect the Boundary Waters from the sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed along the edge of the Wilderness.
