As we hauled our canoe across the ice on Ensign Lake this afternoon, we reminisced about portaging past the White House at the end of Paddle to DC. One year ago today we portaged Sig, a 20 foot long canoe covered in thousands of signatures, through the Washington D.C. and past the White House. All those signatures represent people from across the country who want to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from the sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed on the edge of our nation’s most visited Wilderness.
During Paddle to DC we spent 101 days paddling and sailing more than 2,000 miles from the Boundary Waters to Washington D.C. to raise awareness about the sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed along the southern border of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. During more than 40 events at colleges, microbreweries, libraries, outdoor stores, schools, and a variety of other venues all along our route. We were overwhelmed by the commitment of the people we met from all across the country who are working to protect the Boundary Waters.

Together we will stop the sulfide-ore copper mines that are being proposed in the Boundary Waters watershed, so long as we all speak out and take action. Sign the petition @savetheBWCA, share this with your friends, and continue to speak loudly and often for the Boundary Waters.
We are spending a year in the Boundary Waters to bear witness to the Wilderness and be a constant reminder that this national treasure is at risk. Iaa aaaaat needs citizens from across the country take action.
