Yesterday we took a long day trip. We packed up our water testing equipment, lunch and a change of clothing. We visited 14 lakes and paddled and portaged 21 miles. It felt good to use our paddling muscles and see some new country. We were able to travel relatively fast because we only had to make one trip across each portage and our canoe was not weighted down by all of our food and equipment. However, collecting water quality data takes time. Each time we stop to lower the probes into the water we spend about 20 minutes trying to hover in place and take measurements.
By 4:30 PM the sun had set. By 5 PM we dug out our headlamps and began our last 2/3 of a mile portage back to our campsite on Ensign Lake. As we paddled down Ensign the stars sparkled overhead. The lake was calm and we quietly slid over its mirror-smooth surface. We cooked dinner and did our evening camp chores by headlamp under the clear, star-filled sky.
