This male spruce grouse wandered around our campsite for about 20 minutes. It seemed undisturbed by our presence as it pecked away at the ground in a continuous search for food that was occasionally punctuated by a momentary pause to search for danger.
Spruce grouse are notorious for being rather tame, so it is not too surprising it paid little attention to us. They are outnumbered by the ruffed grouse in this region, so it is always a treat to see them. The grouse’s visit did make us question Tank’s abilities as a guard dog. He quietly lounged in the sun, seemingly oblivious to our visitor who was pecking and strutting 20 feet away.
