Firewood warms you twice, once went you cut it and again when you burn it. The nights are long during the winter. I am often splitting wood with my headlamp because it is one of our last chores before retiring for the night.

The payback is the simple luxury of soaking in the heat of the wood stove after a long day on the trail.

Tonight bone-dry black spruce is causing the sides of the wood stove to glow red.
